CROSSING THE JULIAN ALPS

“For all the mountains I have seen, nothing equals the Julian [Alps]” writes J. Kugy in his book The Life of a Mountaineer. This is how he begins the chapter about the Julian Alps. Perhaps for its crystalline waters, or perhaps for its impressive mountains (despite their modest altitude) that gives them a more severe look compared to more famous mountain massifs, whichever the case, Kugy, writer, alpinist and traveler, was an expert of this relatively unknown and yet so very fascinating side of the Alps.

TRAVERSE OF BRENTA DOLOMITES

The proposed itinerary takes advantage of the system of equipped ledges that cross the massifs from north to south. There is also the possibility, with greater mountaineering commitment, which is never greater than II grade, to reach the top of the massifs’ highest peaks: Tosa Peak and Brenta Peak.

If you decide to climb in the San Lucano valley you should know you aren’t just going to climb: there’s a tricky approach on wild terrain, the route rarely done (it means no pitons ), a bivouac is generally required and after all the long descent to the valley.

All of these ingredients let you live the taste of real adventure!

The route leads through the powerful Titan Pillar to the Prima Pala’s top; the climb is never inane and the very few repetitions don’t help you to find the way for sure.

Adamello is a double-face mountain: sweet and sunny on his summit highland but steep and wild on the north face.

During the last few years many modern mixed routes had been tracked on. We did “Senza Chiedere Permesso” (750m, V/5, M6), the longest and the most logic one.

November is generally a slow month on the Alps; there is not enough snow to go skiing yet but perhaps a bit to much to climb.

That’s why we planned a trip to Spanish crags for the purpose of discovering new spots!

We spent the first week in Chulilla, really close destination to Valencia. The gorgeous canyon located just below the village provides plenty of routes at every level.

The second one we moved to Siurana; no presentation is required for this spot and its high level routes.

We gave a look to the impressive Montsant face either (looks like a Spanish Ceuse almost!), made by huge concrete walls.

The way up to the volcano begins just from the last houses of the village. It takes from 2 to 3 hours and leads to Pizzo sopra la Fossa, a great panoramic point of view to see the craters and the volcano’s activity.

The show is amazing! You cannot get not touched while you see the red magma mixed to the orange at sunset time…

Chamonix: some days around Aiguille du Midi and Pointe Lachenal. Glacier travel and mixed ground on the ridges!

On Thursday 23 July we climbed up the Freikofel. Making the traverse from East to West side we could see all the military posts and the village located just behind the top. A lot of military posts inside the tunnels under the top also (headlamp mandatory).

On Saturday 18 July, after a comfortable overnight stay at Rif. Pellarini, we walked towards the Gola Nord-Est, Jof Fuart. It’s a classic mountaineering route that try to follow the easiest line of the face.

Light crampons can be useful actually due to the snow fields at the bottom.

Great weather let us free to choose the way back to Rif. Pellarini (Via ferrata Anita Goitan), making a great “loop” around the mountain.
